Special Events: Rodeo/Western Art
Rodeos provide some of the best opportunities for photography of all sports. It tests the skill of the participants and the animals as well as the photographer. Rodeo is the official sport of the state of South Dakota where we have a home and studio in the Black Hills, just outside of Deadwood. Although many people unfamiliar with the western lifestyle look down on the rodeo as being cruel, the rodeo reflects the lifestyle of western ranchers. Many of the rodeo events come from daily activities of cowboys and ranchers.
We cover PRCA rodeos whenever we can; although we are not sanctioned rodeo photographers and cannot shoot from inside the arena, our long glass gives us a perspective that cannot be achieved inside. Traditional rodeo photography typically involves catching the "perfect" shot and "perfect" form. Many rodeo photographers strive for those shots during each ride since they often are sold to the participants. We try to get shots that are not typical, yet representative of the event; hence, our shots tend to be non-traditional but still a reflection of the sport, cowboy, and animals.
