RACING

Most of my experience shooting races has been with flat track racing, but I occasionally shoot motocross, drag races, and snowmobiles.  Much like rodeo photography, I'm kind of an "outsider" in that I don't follow a circuit and post images for sale to participants.  I shot the Springfield Mile twice a year for over 7 years for Toyota.  I originally shot the Mile for an article for Harley-Davidson's HOG Magazine.  So, my focus has always been to document the event rather than get individual shots that I could sell.  This allowed me to experiment a bit with different angles, shooting techniques, less popular track positions, and so on.  Among a sea of conventional 70-200mm lenses, I mostly shot with 400mm and 600mm lenses which gave an entirely different look than the "accepted" lenses.  I also shot with extreme wide angle lenses, which produced some of my favorite images.  Shooting riders at 100+mph which such long lenses also proved to be an enjoyable challenge.
